TENNIS
Olivia Orsborn has followed in the footsteps of her older siblings, William and Lucy, in being selected for the Central Region team for the national teams championship starting tomorrow in Christchurch.
The Central region includes Taranaki, Manawatu-Whanganui, Wairarapa and Wellington, and the teams feature four boys and four girls in under-12s, under-14s, and under-17s.
Olivia, 11, will play singles and doubles in the U12 team to take on Northern, Auckland, Waikato Bays, Canterbury, and Southern.
The team with the most points over the four days of round-robin play will be crowned winners.
Play starts tomorrow at the Wilding Park Tennis Centre with the first round of singles.
The Orsborn siblings have been the first Wairarapa players selected for the team since Shane Colton several years ago.
HOCKEY
Blowout scores highlighted Sunday’s first round of the Wairarapa Hockey local leagues, which started on Saturday.
Gladstone Bulls stampeded over Featherston 13-0, Comvita Kia Kaha thumped Old Boys 6-0, and Tremain’s Red Star also put six unanswered goals past JNL. Carterton Vets got the better of Dalefield Dodgers, winning 7-2 in the men’s division.
Gladstone Gold got their women’s division one campaign underway with a 15-0 shellacking of Featherston, and Tremain’s Red Star were too good for Comvita Kia Kaha, winning 5-1.
In women’s division two, Foxies won the Featherston derby 2-0 over the Force, Gladstone Heifers edged Wairarapa Mitsubishi 1-0, Property Brokers sneaked a 2-1 win over Eketahuna Tuis, and Coasties were 3-0 victors over Martinborough.
FOOTBALL
Carterton Redbacks kicked off the defence of their Wairarapa local league title with a 3-0 defeat of Douglas Villa Skulls in the first round of the combined division one and two competition.
Progressive Engineering Masterton Athletic were convincing 6-2 winners over Greytown Tremains, Douglas Villa Drake beat McAuley’s Masterton 4-1, Masterton Ziggy’s Glass Presidents had a 3-1 defeat of Featherston United Property Brokers, and Douglas Villa Fall Protect and Carterton Reapers fought out a 4-4 draw.
Masterton Lions were the big winners in division three, easily accounting for Carterton 8-0, Evergreens had a 3-0 win over Carterton Goal Diggers, Greytown Umbrella Group Spartans defeated DV Mitre 10 Megabeens 3-1, and Martinborough edged Greytown The Offering 4-3.
BOWLS
The four were the star performers for Martinborough, who finished a credible third in their pool at the national women’s interclub sevens tournament in Wellington over the weekend.
The four were unbeaten over the five rounds of pool play, while the single had two wins and three losses, and the pair had one win and four losses. Martinborough’s two match victories came against Invercargill [3-0] and Bowls Palmerston North [2-1].
The Martinborough men finished fourth in their pool with match victories over Manurewa Cossie [2-1], and Riverside from Marlborough [2-1]. The pair and four both had two wins and two losses, while the single suffered four losses.
INDOOR BOWLS
Todd Mahupuku from the East Club won the first Central Wairarapa indoor event of the season, winning the regional one-to-five-year singles at the Hogg Crescent Complex on Sunday.
Mahupuku played Nathan Beilby from the St Francis club, Marton, in the final, winning a close battle 11-7.
On Sunday, the four of Donald Leighton, John Duncan, Tina Patrick, and Janice Leighton headed off a small field and qualified to represent Wairarapa in the zone finals of the NZ Masters Fours.
This weekend, the NZ mixed fours will be played on Saturday, and several teams are travelling to Ashhurst on Sunday to play in that club’s fours tournament, one of the biggest in the lower North Island. – CHRIS COGDALE
