Drivers flee from police
Police are investigating two fleeing driver incidents in the region, where at least one road spike deployment failed to bring the vehicle to a stop. Police said officers sighted a “vehicle of interest” on State Highway 2 near West Taratahi shortly before 4pm on Wednesday. The vehicle failed to stop when signalled. However, police said a pursuit was not initiated, and instead, officers observed the vehicle’s movements. “Road spikes were deployed in an attempt to bring the vehicle to a stop.” It was the first of two fleeing incidents on Wednesday, with officers responding to reports of dangerous driving on Church St in Masterton at 5.20pm. Police officers again elected not to pursue, and said inquiries for both incidents were ongoing.
Roadworks: Expect delays
Road surface milling is set to begin on State Highway 2 at the intersection with Ngaumutawa Rd, with motorists advised to expect delays. Waka Kotahi NZTA said the work will take place over three nights, beginning overnight on Sunday April 16 until Tuesday April 18, inclusive. The road surface will be gravel during this time with a lower speed limit. “Our crews will be monitoring and keeping [the road] as smooth as possible, but given the volume of traffic through this area, there will be a temporary speed limit of 30kmh. This work may cause some delays.” NZTA said the road would be resealed later this month. It said the work would identify areas requiring repair before roundabout construction – part of the transport agency’s SH2 road safety improvements – began. NZTA urged motorists to be patient and follow the instructions of traffic management while the work was underway. “Be mindful of the temporary road limits. These are in place for your safety and the safety of our workers.”
Three-car crash
The people involved in a three-car crash in Solway yesterday afternoon have escaped injury. Emergency services responded to the crash on High St at 1.15pm. Police said there were no reports of injuries, and at least one vehicle required towing. Traffic was flowing normally by 3pm.
