News in brief, April 12

Street light
outages

Masterton District Council [MDC] said it had been working with power supplier Mercury to address ongoing street light outages that had happened over the past two weeks. Outages have been reported across Masterton, with Solway appearing to be most affected – including South Rd, South Belt, Harley St, Betts Ave, Madden St, Taranaki St, Short St, Laurent Place, and Vivian St. MDC said reports have also been received from parts of Chapel St and the lower end of Cornwall St. “We are currently working with our power retailer to resolve these issues,” roading services manager Kaine Jaquiery said. “This is not an issue with the lights themselves. It appears there are a series of power network issues, and we are liaising with our supplier to investigate and repair these faults within the street light network.” Jaquiery said the council apologised for any inconvenience and encouraged anyone experiencing outages in their area to call MDC on 06 370 6300.

Turnout
for burnouts

Police were called to vehicles doing burnouts on Glenmorven Rd, in Morison Bush at about 6.45pm on Monday. A police spokesperson said two vehicles were found at the scene. “One was impounded for sustained loss of traction, while another was pink-stickered due to it having incorrect plates.” Enquiries are continuing.

Hill closure

The Remutaka Hill will be closed for essential maintenance on Sunday, April 16 from 9pm to 4am Monday. Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency said access will be available for emergency services throughout the closure. “If you’re a night shift worker or must travel, a limited escorted vehicle service is available for light vehicles.” Bookings are essential; email [email protected] to arrange.

Calm weather

After a few weeks of weather events that sat more on the extreme side, it will be a relief for many that the high winds and heavy rains seem to have died down for now. Metservice said the week ahead was looking like a mix of sunny patches and northerlies developing, with a few showers expected and rain mostly expected to stay within the ranges.
