Pool closed
The Trust House Recreation Centre toddler pool remains closed after vandals damaged the roof earlier this year. A report to Masterton councillors stated the existing polycarbonate roof sheeting is unavailable as a product in New Zealand. The damaged roofing also led to the discovery of an issue with the laminated roof support beams. A structural engineer’s report has provided advice on temporary repairs that would extend the roof’s life for two to three years. “Whilst we await the insurance proposal, the toddler pool remains closed, which has an impact on the delivery of Learn to Swim programmes,” the council report said.
Security gates in
In response to incidents of anti-social behaviour at Masterton’s Queen Elizabeth Park Grandstand, security gates have been installed at each end of the access steps up to the grandstand that are in keeping with its heritage theme and will help clearly define the seating area as being off-limits when not in use. A council report on the condition of the CCTV at the grandstand has been requested, and any recommendations will be considered and actioned as necessary.
Diversity event
Masterton District Council is in the preliminary stages of organising a Festival of Cultural Diversity. Plans include a week-long celebration from June 19-25, coinciding with World Refugee Day on June 20. The focal point of the festival will be a main event on Saturday, June 24, which will feature cultural performances, food, and music. The event is still being finalised and further details are yet to be confirmed. The soon-to-be-formed Whakaoriori Trust will be providing support for the event.
Power outages
There have been two major electricity outages affecting Masterton Powerco customers this week. The first occurred at approximately 8.30pm on Sunday and affected 28 customers. It was the result of switch gear failing following planned maintenance work on Papawai Place, and power was restored to all customers by 11.45pm. The second occurred just before 12.30pm on Monday and affected 917 customers in Kuripuni after an insulator failed on a power pole. Supply was progressively restored, with all customers reconnected by 2.20pm.
