Fleeing driver escapes police
A driver evaded arrest after fleeing police on Wednesday night. The speeding vehicle’s driver failed to stop for police on Hillcrest St, Solway, at 7:30 pm. Police did not pursue the vehicle, and it was not located again. Police policy states that pursuit is only justified when the threat posed by the vehicle occupant, and the necessity to immediately apprehend the driver or passenger, outweighs the risk of harm created by the pursuit.
Power out
Hundreds of homes lost power in Wairarapa as temperatures dropped into the single digits on Wednesday morning. Powerco’s outage map said 234 properties at Cape Palliser were left without power from 6:37am yesterday until power was restored at 3pm. Meanwhile, 59 homes in the Tinui area experienced an electricity cut, as did two Gladstone properties. Powerco cited trees in lines from high winds as a cause of the outages.
Fares changing
Bus and train fares are changing today. Peak snapper fares are increasing by 6 per cent. Cash fares will also increase by 6 per cent, rounded to the nearest 50 cents or dollar. Off-peak snapper fares will now receive a 50 per cent discount.
New vehicle
charging station
A new electric vehicle [EV] charging station has been installed at Moore Wilson’s Masterton store on Dixon St. The 75kW dual charger can charge two EVs at the same time and is available for use by the wider community. Moore Wilson partnered with Wellington tech startup Thundergrid to install the charging station and was supported by the government’s Low Emission Transport Fund, which supports the integration of clean transport technology to minimize the impact of climate change.
Dog fee discount
People over the age of 65 will be offered a discounted dog registration fee in Carterton. A report to Carterton District Council said the discount would roll out as part of the 2023 registration year and provide a more affordable option for pet companionship for older residents on a reduced or set income or pension.
