Emma McLeod’s meteoric rise continues, and she looks set to make her Hallyburton Johnstone Shield debut for the Central Hinds this weekend.
The 16-year-old joins fellow Wairarapa Korus Melissa Hansen and Ocean Bartlett in the squad to play the Canterbury Magicians in a doubleheader at Hagley Park, Christchurch today and tomorrow.
The selection continues a phenomenal season for McLeod, who was one of the stars for New Zealand at the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in South Africa, with the highlight being a rapid-fire 59 in the win over Rwanda.
Most recently, the talented all-rounder impressed for Central Districts A in a series of three games against Wellington ‘A’ last weekend in the capital.
Opening the batting in the first of two T20s last Saturday, McLeod scored a run a ball 22 [one four and one six] in CD’s 14-run victory. She followed that with five runs when batting at five in the second T20, but it was her bowling that impressed, with figures of 2-10 as CD won by 35 runs.
In Sunday’s 50-over game, McLeod opened the batting and smashed an aggressive 24, including four fours, off just 15 balls, as CD completed a clean sweep with a three-wicket victory. In Wellington’s innings, she bowled a miserly four overs conceding only 10 runs.
Korus wicketkeeper-batter Gemma Sims showed she wouldn’t look out of place back in the Hinds, with a well-crafted 39 not out off 35 balls, including two fours, in the second T20 and a solid 22 in the one-dayer.
Elizabeth Cohr also impressed with some tight bowling, although she didn’t take a wicket over the three games. In her early only turn at bat, she scored 13no in the one-day match.
CHAPPLE CUP:
Post Office Hotel Wairarapa are in the same pool as Horowhenua-Kapiti, Marlborough and Manawatu at the Chapple Cup tournament starting today in Levin.
The top team from each pool after three rounds of T20 cricket will meet in tomorrow afternoon’s final, while the second-placed teams will play off for the Cave Cup.
Hayes holds off Gordon
ATHLETICS:
Andrew Hayes held off Whana Gordon to win the third race of the Athletics and Cycling Masterton Wairarapa Times-Age 5km series on Sunday.
Hayes completed the riverbank course in 18 minutes and 47 seconds, beating Gordon by 28 seconds, with Glen Fraser third.
Vicky Paine was the first woman home and eighth overall in 23min 38sec. Sue Bankier, recovering from a knee injury, was the second woman and Amanda Woodmass third.
The 2km race turned out to be a contest between the Goodger and Charters families.
Kendal Goodger squeezed home in 12:30, just two seconds ahead of Shylah Charters, and Meila Goodger and Nivana Charters were next to finish.
