Civil Defence issues flood warning

More heavy rain is due to set in today, and Civil Defence is warning people in areas affected by Cyclone Gabrielle of potential flooding and landslides.

Metservice said a heavy rain watch was in place for Wairarapa for 24 hours from 6am today until 6am tomorrow, but it could be extended.

It said the region could expect periods of heavy rain and volumes may approach warning criteria.

As of yesterday afternoon, there was still some uncertainty about the rainfall distribution and expected accumulations.

Metservice urged people to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case changes are made.

Civil Defence said it understood the news of more heavy rain was not what people wanted to hear.

More rain could cause further impacts, such as flooding and landslides, in areas already affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, it said.

It said this morning was a good time to prepare in case you need to evacuate.

People should pack grab bags with essential supplies and medications and have them ready for everyone in their family.

“Plan where you will go if you need to evacuate. This could be to whanau or a friend’s home in a safe area, or a civil defence centre.”

Civil Defence said people should clear waste and debris away from drains near their homes and in the street while there is daylight.

People should also stay away from existing landslide areas, the agency advised.

“Stay away from any cliffs, particularly coastal cliffs, and from around waterways in the regions that have been badly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.

“If you learn or suspect that a landslide is occurring or is about to occur in your area, evacuate immediately.

“Getting out of the path of a landslide or debris flow path is your best protection.”
