Car rolls
into river
Four people in a car that rolled several metres down a bank into a river are “very lucky” to have escaped serious injury. Emergency services, including a helicopter from Palmerston North, responded to reports of a car in Awhea River, Tora, shortly after 6pm on Saturday. Fire and Emergency confirmed nobody was trapped in the vehicle, and none of the occupants appeared to have suffered injuries in the incident. The small car reportedly left Tora Rd, shortly after it transitioned to gravel, and fell 5-10 metres down the bank. The car rolled once before landing upright in Awhea River. A firefighter said the occupants were very lucky after the recent heavy rain. “Two days prior, and they would have been well-under water. You could see where the water had been, and it was quite a lot higher.” The helicopter transported the car’s occupants over the river to the road.
