Where there’s
smoke …
A log jam had firefighters inundating Juken New Zealand [JNL] lumber mill in Waingawa early yesterday morning. A smoke alarm activation shortly after 3am saw brigades from Masterton, Carterton, and Avalon in Lower Hutt responding.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the Avalon crew, called for its aerial ladder, was subsequently stood down.
“The last truck left [JNL] just before 5am. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, but in places like mills you need the engineers involved to shut down all the equipment so you can get access to certain areas.
“You work hand in hand with the experts. It’s safety first.” The spokesperson said pulp mills, such as JNL, typically had built-in fire suppressant systems, and fire crews would use water where necessary and thermal imaging cameras to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
