Police are warning locals to be alert after a spate of suspicious behaviour on private properties around Wairarapa.
Multiple residents across Carterton and Masterton have reported people coming onto their property, shining flashlights and trying door handles.
One Masterton resident reported on social media that they saw a torchlight shining in their window.
“Given the design of my backyard, whoever was holding said torch had to be on my property,” they said.
“While there are many ‘innocent’ explanations that are possible, even at 1am, there is also a cost of living crisis, and it’s very possible that this was someone scouting houses for a burglary, to do some less honest Christmas shopping.
“Please make sure your doors and windows are locked before heading out.”
Senior Sergeant Bradley Allen said there was an increase in reported behaviour as Christmas approached.
“Police remain committed to keeping the Wairarapa area safe in the Christmas and summer period. We will continue to conduct patrols in the area and respond to emergencies and suspected crime.
“Coming closer to Christmas, we have received more reports of suspicious behaviour. We would like to take this time to remind people to keep themselves and their properties safe.”
Allen said they urged the community to take preventative measures to ensure property is protected.
“A key focus for police is preventing crime from happening in the first place.
“As we enter the summer months, police would like to remind people to make security a priority by keeping all buildings and vehicles secure.
“Burglar alarms and security cameras deter potential thieves and help Police identify criminals.”
Allen said police appreciated reports from the public of suspicious activity and crime as it assisted in finding and holding those responsible to account, and asked for this continued support.
“Please look out for your neighbours and your community, and let police know if anything or anyone looks out of place.
“Police take theft, burglary and destruction of property seriously. Anyone witnessing suspicious activity is asked to contact police via 111. “
