Region hit by another drenching

Ngawi got a “good whack”, a MetService spokesperson said, after the town copped the worst of the region’s wet weather this week.

The South Wairarapa town measured a whopping 97mm of rain in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday.

Cape Palliser was similarly drenched, with readings between 70-80mm. The Remutaka Hill summit measured 65mm.

Martinborough and Featherston both measured 48mms. Masterton was the driest area in Wairarapa, with a reading of 35mms.

Emergency preparations at Featherston’s Kiwi Hall were not needed. However, two households collected sandbags in preparation, Featherston community board member Warren Maxwell said.

“It didn’t get as dire as we were preparing for.

“It feels like the maintenance work that Wellington Water and the council have done since earlier this year has sorted a lot of the stormwater problems out.

“There were two houses that grabbed a few sandbags, but I followed up with them this morning, and they didn’t need them.”

A sinkhole that opened up on Main St in Greytown was also quickly filled in.

South Wairarapa mayor Martin Connelly said there was a massive amount of rain in Greytown, with the rain gauge on his house measuring 20mm in half an hour.

“About 40mm of rain per hour is quite substantial.

“It was unusual to see geysers pop up all over town.”

He said Supervalue in Featherston had the usual “lake” build up in front of it.

A spokesperson for MetService said there was “still more in store”, but as Christmas approached, the rain should start to pass.
