Wairarapa pipped Kapiti Coast on ends differential to win their traditional women’s representative fixture on Sunday.
Kapiti won the morning’s 2-4-2 pairs 10-4 before rain intervened and forced the transfer of the afternoon’s singles, pairs, and fours to Carrington’s artificial greens in Carterton.
The Wairarapa A and B sides then dominated the singles and pairs, winning all 12 games. Rozanna Muriwai and promising junior Stacey Smyth impressed in the singles, and the pairs of Makaia Campbell and Fiona Anderson in the A team and their B team counterparts of Mary-Anne Wilson and Tracey Jacobson also put their hands up for future selection.
It wasn’t all over, though as Kapiti evened the ledger by taking all six fours games, resulting in a 16-16 scoreline. That meant the winners would be decided on a countback of ends. Wairarapa took the honours, having won 110 ends compared to Kapiti’s 102 ends.
It was a different story in the men’s fixture, with play at Greytown washed out after the morning’s 2-4-2 pairs. Kapiti were leading 10-4 at the time and were declared the winners.
The next representative outing is the Wellington quadrangular tournament in late January.
In interclub sevens, Martinborough wrapped up their second consecutive championship by a wide margin. The southern club finished the six rounds on 66 points, well clear of Carrington on 35 points, with Masterton on 34.
Martinborough are also on the cusp of repeating last year’s success in the men’s championship.
With the final three rounds to play on Saturday, Martinborough are on 93 points and have an almost unassailable 39-point lead over second-placed Featherston on 54. Carrrington are third on 51 points, followed by Masterton on 43, and Greytown on 30 points.
