Wairarapa sweep home regatta

DRAGON BOATING

The Wairarapa Dragon Boat club dominated racing at the Central Region regatta at Masterton’s Henley Lake on Sunday.

The host club found the calm conditions on the lake to their liking, winning all the day’s races against teams from Wellington and Hawke’s Bay.

Their closest victory came in the women’s 500m, where Wairarapa prevailed in a blanket finish by 0.60 seconds over CanSurvive, with the third-placed Can 2 a further 0.22 seconds behind.

Wairarapa easily won the mixed 500m by more than 10 seconds and had comfortable wins in the demanding women’s and mixed 2km races.

The Wairarapa Club, under the guidance of coach Ivan Karaitiana, now have two teams of men and women, preparing for regattas at Hamilton, Wellington, and Auckland, culminating in the national championship regatta at Lake Karapiro in April 2023.

The club are still looking for new members, and if you’re interested in giving dragon boating a try, you can contact the club through their Facebook page.
