Tracey Collis is seeking re-election to a third term as Tararua District’s mayor, as the election period continues to ramp up.

Collis said the previous term was “really” disruptive and a third term would help carry projects over the line, after announcing her bid on Wednesday.

“It’s been really hard to get everything done. With the new roads, Highway 52 is nearly completed and I’m really looking forwards to being there when it’s done.

“We’re also getting ready for growth – especially in the water space and the housing space.”

Collis said that preparing the town for growth would be one of the most challenging areas of the next term, and climate adaptation to ensure that infrastructure could cope would be paramount.

“We’ve still got the Dannevirke wastewater treatment upgrades to go. And we’re working on getting Three Waters right.

“I have a huge understanding of our water infrastructure, and I know and understand our communities.”

Collis said that the district had changed so much even from three years ago, particularly in forestry.

“Having that understanding will allow us to move where we need to in the district.”

Collis said she was feeling confident about the upcoming election period and even though nobody else had put their hand up for mayor yet, it was only a matter of time.

When asked why people should vote for her, she pointed to her understanding of the community and experience in the previous term.

Candidate nominations for local government elections opened on July 15.

Voting opens on September 16 and closes on October 8.
