Alleged baby attacker remains in custody

The man accused of critically injuring a three-month-old baby will remain behind bars with name suppression.

The 34-year-old appeared via audio-visual link in Masterton District Court yesterday morning.

Judge Barbara Morris extended the accused’s interim name suppression until an appearance next month where he is expected to enter pleas.

It was the man’s second appearance in court after he was charged with wounding the baby with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police were called to a Masterton house on June 16 and found the baby with critical, non-accidental injuries.

The baby remained in a stable condition in Auckland’s Starship Hospital yesterday.

Police conducted scene examinations at two Masterton houses and one vehicle. The man was arrested and charged three days later.

At the time, officer in charge of the investigation Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth, said the incident was traumatic.

“This incident is traumatic for all involved.

“An investigation is underway, and police are working hard to determine the circumstances of the assault. “An equally important focus for the investigation team is the support of the whanau and baby.

“The cooperation of whanau, friends, and the wider community support networks is critical to the investigation, and police wish to thank everyone who, despite the distressing circumstances, have been fully cooperative with the initial investigation.”

The man was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in Masterton District Court in August.
