GOOD FRIDAY CRASH: Driver pleads guilty to a raft of charges

The driver who fled the scene of a serious crash in Featherston on Good Friday has pleaded guilty to six charges, including stealing a vehicle and failing to ascertain injury after a crash.

Rhian Lloyd, 23, from Wellington, was already facing multiple charges in Hutt Valley and Wellington districts when she ploughed into a small car at the intersection of State Highway 53 and South Featherston Rd on Good Friday.
A couple in the car suffered significant injuries in the collision.

One of them, a 20-year-old woman, needed urgent medical attention.

She was airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition, while her partner was taken by ambulance to Wairarapa Hospital in a moderate condition.

Lloyd reportedly stole a vehicle and fled the scene after the crash before being apprehended by police.

The road was closed for several hours to holiday traffic while the serious crash unit investigated.

Lloyd appeared via audio-visual link in the Hutt Valley District Court yesterday on charges relating to the April 15 crash.

Defence lawyer Letitia Smith entered guilty pleas on behalf of her client to two charges of driving while disqualified, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and ascertain injury after a crash, and two charges of unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

No plea was entered to an additional charge of causing injury to someone while driving under the influence of a drug.

Judge Noel Sainsbury directed Lloyd to undertake a drug and alcohol assessment and restorative justice ahead of sentencing on July 22.

Lloyd was ordered to reappear in court on June 7 to enter a plea to the additional drug-driving charge.

She was remanded in custody. A further bail application hearing was scheduled for June 2.
