Martinborough made a clean sweep of the Wairarapa Champion of Champions fours and triples played at Featherston over the weekend.
The men’s four of Gary Muriwai, Scott MacKenzie, Hayden Frew, and Bill Brunenberg qualified for the final with Masterton, with a 17-10 win over Eketahuna, then beat Greytown 16-13 in the semifinals.
Masterton made the final with wins over Lansdowne 15-8 and Featherston 16-13.
The representative-laden Martinborough combination were untroubled in the final, running away for a 17-4 victory.
The Martinborough women’s four of Tanya Wheeler, Janalle Frew, Yvonne Riley, and Rozanna Muriwai were even more dominant, beating Lansdowne 21-3 in the semifinals. They beat Carrington 18-2.
In Sunday’s triples, the men’s line-up of Garry Muriwai, MacKenzie, and Brunenberg beat Park 31-5, and Featherston 27-6 to qualify for the final against Greytown, who had edged Masterton 12-10 in a tight semifinal.
Martinborough were made to work hard in the decider, eventually winning 19-11.
The Martinborough women’s team of Wheeler, Janalle Frew, and Maryanne Ashworth were also pushed hard by Carrington in the final, winning the title by the narrowest of margins 18-17.
Earlier, Martinborough had beaten Lansdowne 17-6 and Masterton 20-12, while Carrington dispatched Greytown 14-16 in their semifinal.
The weekend’s winners, along with Masterton’s Matthew Day, the men’s Champion of Champions singles winner, and the pairs Champions of Champions Dale Rowe and Olivia Mancer [Featherston], and Carrington’s Gavin Hamlyn and Roger Smeaton will compete in the national Champion of Champion playoffs in July.
