Three people travelling from Wairarapa’s coast had a lucky escape Boxing Day when the car they were in left the road in Tauweru, crashing through a fence and down a bank.

Emergency services said they responded to the single-vehicle crash on Sunday at about 4.30pm.

The grey four-wheel drive, heading towards Masterton, had veered left after a bend on Castlepoint Rd, plunging headlong down a steep bank.

Wellington Free Ambulance said two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene, and a third was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Masterton fire officer Doug Flowerday said two fire engines attended the crash.

He said the motorists “were a little bit shaken” and had some “minor bumps and bruises”.

He said all occupants had extricated themselves from the wreck when emergency services arrived.

A couple of hours later, smoke and the smell of burnt tyres remained at the site, and the car, with caved-in roof and shattered windscreen, was on the side of the road.

A tow-truck driver removing the vehicle said he had winched and partly driven the car out of the paddock.

Police said investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
