A pipe at risk of failure at Greytown’s Water Treatment Plant is being replaced by Wellington Water.
The pipe runs next to the bore at Greytown’s Soldiers Memorial Park.
WW project manager Adam Mattsen said the company had fast-tracked plans to replace and divert the pipe after identifying it may be at risk of failing.
“It’s important that this community has a long-lasting and reliable water network, and this is the first stage of work planned to upgrade the infrastructure located in the park,” he said.
Residents would still have access to the sports grounds at Memorial Park at weekends, with crews working to clear the site on Friday afternoons.
“As always, we will do our best to minimise any disruption, and we really appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community,” Mattsen said.
This work is scheduled to be completed before the summer pool opens end of November and is part of WW’s continued improvement to the water network in South Wairarapa.
A flow strategy has also been updated for the Waiohine and Memorial Park water treatment plants to understand the supply risks to Greytown in the context of the two project upgrades.
Greytown is heavily reliant on the Memorial Park bore for daily supply which means there is an elevated risk of supply shortage if WW proceeds with the shutdowns and commissioning of the new bore pump and containerised treatment plant at Memorial Park.
To mitigate this risk, WW has installed and commissioned a fourth bore at Waiohine which provides an additional 60 per cent supply capacity.
In addition to this, WW is recommending to prioritise the commissioning of the Waiohine treated water reservoir which will provide 10 times the supply storage resilience compared with current.
This will allow increased supply to Greytown and longer shutdown periods for the Memorial Park commissioning works, reducing the risk of potential supply shortages.
Additional senior resources have also been brought in to deliver the Waiohine and Memorial Park water treatment plant upgrade projects.
The primary focus for the enhanced project team on this project is to have the treated water reservoir commissioning completed before summer demand pressures on supply.
