FOOTBALL
Rathkeale came from behind and won bragging rights with a 2-1 win over Wairarapa College in their Wellington secondary schoolboys premier division fixture on Saturday.
Jarden French gave Waicol the early lead, but Rathkeale bounced back with goals to Ollie Vincent and Liam Gale for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Despite Waicol creating several chances in the second spell, Rathkeale held on for a deserved victory.
Rathkeale are now fifth in the championship, but only three points off the lead shared by four teams. Waicol are seventh on goal difference, but have yet to score a point.
Rathkeale are away to the powerful Wellington College, and Waicol at home to Scots College on Saturday in the final round before the holiday break.
HOCKEY
St Matthew’s prevailed 2-1 in a tough traditional clash with Waicol to win the Dunce Cup and retain their perfect record in the Intercity secondary schoolgirls’ premier championship.
St Matt’s were expected to extend their unbeaten run against Freyberg High School at Clareville last night. Waicol travel to Levin to play Waiopehu College.
Rathkeale and Waicol could not be separated in their Annear Cup fixture, which finished in a 2-2 draw.
Rathkeale remain second in their Intercity championship, and were to play Whanganui High School last night. Fifth-placed Waicol take on the Palmerston North Boys’ High School Second XI.
In boys’ division one, Kuranui continue to lead after their scoreless draw with Tararua College.
RUGBY
Wairarapa College dropped their second game in the Wellington secondary schools premier two championship with a 19-31 loss to unbeaten Upper Hutt College.
Waicol are now third in the championship behind Upper Hutt and St Patrick’s Silverstream Second XV.
They play Bishop Viard College away on Saturday.
Rathkeale suffered their sixth loss of the Central North Island Championship, going down 14-37 away to St John’s Hamilton.
They meet Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth on Saturday. Rathkeale would be favoured to score their second win of the championship with Francis Douglas struggling at the bottom of the table without a win.
ATHLETICS
Rathkeale athlete Jack Hunter outgunned his older rivals to win the Under-18 North Island Cross-Country Championship in Taupo last weekend.
Hunter, 16, from Athletics Wairarapa, proved too strong for his older rivals, finishing the challenging 5km course in the impressive time of 16 minutes 0.6 seconds, more than 30 seconds ahead of runner-up Ronan Codyre from Auckland.
