Wairarapa College trounced Wellington College Gold by 254 runs to move into fourth in the Wellington secondary schools’ premier three championship.

Waicol amassed an imposing total of 417-6 in their 50 overs, with Mark Steventon scoring a century and three teammates posting half-centuries.

Steventon’s 112 came off only 60 balls and featured 19 fours and two sixes. Openers Conley Alexander [72] and Zach Anstis [57], and number four Samuel Payne also had a field day on the placid Waicol pitch and a lightning quick outfield.

Wellington College were never in the hunt, with only Henry Isac, batting at number seven, troubling the scorers with 76 not out after he came in with the score at 32-5.

Waicol now play Wellington College Black away on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Rathkeale have been knocked out of the Gillette Cup after a nine-wicket loss to the powerful Palmerston North Boys High School last Friday.

Wairarapa representative opener Jake Jonas shone with a patient 65 in Rathkeale’s total of 151, well below a par score for 50 overs on the Rathkeale Oval.

PNBHS lost the early wicket of Josh Campbell in the second over, bowled by offspinner Jesse McIntyre, but were untroubled from then on.

Bayley Latter [70no] and Jaiden Meyer [59no] brought up the winning runs in the 27th over for their college to progress to the next round of the national secondary schoolboys’ championship playoffs.

Andrew Taylor underlined his talent with his second century in four games as Rathkeale backed up with a deserved draw with St Peter’s Cambridge in a two-day game played at Rathkeale on Sunday and Monday.

The promising wicketkeeper scored 112 [136 balls, including 19 fours] in Rathkeale’s impressive second innings of 263-7, as the match petered out for a tame draw. That followed his 101 against Francis Douglas Memorial College [New Plymouth] last month.

Batting first, Rathkeale scored 212, led by 70 to McIntyre.

A total well short of 200 looked likely until a 40-run ninth-wicket partnership between Will Summerfield [14] and James Wilkinson [22] gave the home side a respectable total.

Offspinner Wilkinson and medium pacer Charlie Sims each claimed three wickets in St Peter’s innings of 242.

Rathkeale’s second innings started poorly, losing the first two wickets for six runs. But Taylor, along with assured innings by Jonas [41], McIntyre [35], and Jack Sorrell [39], guided the team to safety.
