Wairarapa Cricket will recommend tweaks to the Central Districts Women’s Super League, which finished on Sunday after some players had little involvement in the games.
The concept involved four evenly selected teams, with the Central Hinds players spread among the best of the other district players to provide promising players a step up from the Shrimpton Trophy district competition.
The teams were to play two 50-over games in Palmerston North in November, but the second day was washed out.
The league wrapped up last weekend, with three rounds of T20 matches in Levin.
Nine Korus were in the Tararua Kotahi side, while Ocean Bartlett and Gracie Donaldson played for the Palmerston North Tui. The Kotahi failed to win a game over the two weekends.
Wairarapa Cricket, who were the host association for the Kotahi, were disappointed that some players weren’t given the opportunity to play more.
Female cricket manager and Central Hinds all-rounder Melissa Hansen said the results were immaterial, and Wairarapa Cricket took the view that the league gave the players some good cricket and a chance develop and learn from the more experienced players.
“It’s a great concept and, obviously, a lot of those girls do need to take that next step up and challenge themselves against some of the Hinds players,” she said.
“But also, there were some comments going around saying it was a bit like Shrimpton Trophy, because there are Hinds in every district team, and then with Wairarapa being one of the hosts, we still went away with some of the girls not doing too much.”
Of those, medium pace bowler Ella Southey was flown from Auckland, did not bowl a ball, batted at number 11, and faced one delivery.
Left-arm medium pacer Donaldson, who played for the Palmerston North Tui, bowled one delivery, from which the winning runs were scored.
There were some positives for the Korus players, though.
Hansen found some form after a lean trot with the bat, scoring 61 against the Tui, and 31 against Coastal Challengers, after coming in with the score at 24-5.
Of the others, Hansen said Elizabeth Cohr bowled well, Emma McLeod didn’t get much opportunity with the bat, Olivia Roseingrave bowled well and picked up some wickets, and late call-up Courtney Olson bowled in the game against the Tui and claimed two of the three wickets to fall.
Bartlett impressed with a top score of 45 for the Tui in the win over the Kotahi.
Wairarapa Cricket general manager and Korus coach Simon Roseingrave said Wairarapa had made a financial and logistic contribution to the Tararua Kotahi, and that “hopefully upon review, there will be some tweaks that will allow for an improved player experience for all.”
