Time has ticked away, but not on the Carterton town clock since early 2018 – but the clock’s chimes are to ring out in the Wairarapa town in early 2021.
After major earthquake strengthening work, on Monday morning, the newly-painted bright yellow clock face was unveiled sitting above the dark grey concrete tower.
Carterton designers, Gregg Crimp and David Robinson’s ‘colour makeover’ design, won the most votes of the three design options Carterton ratepayers could choose from in October 2019.
The 1960s colour scheme, that was fashionable at that time the tower was built, aimed to “highlight and celebrate the tower’s architecture, and it can be dynamically transform at night using low-energy coloured LED lighting [funding permitted]”.
The cost of the earthquake strengthening work, tree removal, and design is expected to come in with a bill of half a million dollars.
The British-made clock parts are in storage and are going back into their rightful position soon.
Comment on the street on Monday was about wanting to hear the town clock chime, rather than particularly about the look of the tower or clockface.
With support from the Carterton Lions Club, landscaping and planting at the clock tower site is planned to start in January.
