An eye on crime – how our districts stack up

Greytown’s crime rate has improved the most of any towns in Wairarapa year-on-year up to the end of October. Neighbouring Featherston, however has had the biggest increase. TOM TAYLOR reports.

Victimisation crimes are down 52 per cent in Greytown compared with last year, latest police data shows.

These crimes include acts intended to cause injury, sexual assault, unlawful entry with intent, burglary, and theft.

Wairarapa Police credited this to good police work.

In August this year, six years after the town’s police station closed, the Greytown Police Hub opened.

For the 12-month period ended October 31, there were 34 victimisation crimes in Greytown, down from 71 the year prior.

Greytown thefts were down 46 per cent on the previous year – 17 thefts were recorded, compared with 32 thefts the previous year.

In Martinborough, 28 victimisation crimes were reported down from 40 the year prior.

Victimisation crimes in Featherston were up 17 per cent, with 110 recorded up to October 31, and 94 recorded in the same period a year prior.

Masterton and Carterton districts had relatively static victimisation offences.

In the Carterton district, 189 offences were recorded in the year up to the end of October, whereas 185 offences were recorded in the same period the previous year [up 2.2 per cent].

In the Masterton district, 1230 offences were recorded in the past year, whereas 1287 offences were recorded in the same period the previous year [down 4.4 per cent].
