More than 140 tennis players from around the country will converge on the Trust House Masterton Tennis Centre this weekend for the club’s 57th annual seniors’ doubles tournament.
The standard of tennis is expected to be very high as many of the pairings have lots of representative experience, and are still playing premier interclub in their regions.
Ex-Opaki and Wairarapa rep player Russell Broughton, now from Hawke’s Bay, won two titles last year but he and Ron Garrick might struggle to retain their A grade men’s title against newcomers to the tournament and top seeds Jono Spring and Gareth Toland [Palmerston North].
Jane Wyllie [Hawke’s Bay] and Tania Phillips [Hutt Valley] have combined to form a powerful combination in the A grade women’s division.
Broughton and Wyllie are the top seeds for the mixed doubles, with their sternest opposition likely to come from Phillips and Simon Osborne [Hutt Valley].
The men’s and women’s doubles will be played today and the mixed doubles tomorrow.
Play starts at 8.30am both days at the Masterton Tennis Centre on Dixon St.
