The strong Masterton club hold commanding leads after the first day of play in the Mitsubishi Sevens premier interclub competition last Saturday.

Only three teams lined up for the women’s competition at Carrington in Carterton, with Greytown not entering a team this year.

Masterton won all six games in the singles, pairs, and fours against Featherston, and Carrington, and have a near-unassailable lead on 44 points. Featherston are on 15, and Carrington, eight.

Masterton also won six of their nine games in the men’s championship, but the competition was much tighter at Featherston, and only 18 points cover all four teams.

The four were unbeaten, while Matthew Day won two of his three singles matches, and the pair won one of their three games.

Masterton are leading on 46 points from Featherston on 32, Greytown 30, and Carrington on 28.

The third and fourth rounds in both championships will be played on November 28.

The weather washed out the first day of play in the second string Hannam Knowles interclub competition on Sunday.
