Masterton stamped themselves as Shirley Corlett Trophy favourites with a 2-1 win over Martinborough in the latest round of men’s interclub tennis at Gladstone on Saturday.
As expected, the singles matches were shared, and the tie was decided in the doubles.
Masterton’s Boon Huxtable had the better in his number one singles match with Chris Wilkie, scoring a 6-3 6-1 victory, and extending his unbeaten run in the competition.
Marco de Groot evened the fixture for Martinborough with a decisive 6-4 6-1 defeat of Chad Parson.
Huxtable and Hooper then combined to beat Chris Wilkie and de Groot 6-3 6-4 in a closely-fought doubles match.
Martinborough recorded their first win of the championship with a 3-0 clean sweep of Gladstone.
Ed Wilkie easily dispatched promising teenager William Day 6-1 6-2 in the battle of the number ones, and Jaimie McMaster was a convincing 6-0 6-4 winner over Mitchell Blackwood.
The doubles were a closer contest with Martinborough coming from behind to win 4-6 6-1 6-2.
The Kuranui College-Opaki match was postponed.
Martinborough lead the women’s championship despite slipping to a surprise 3-0 loss to Wairarapa College, after their number one Karen Delahunty was injured in the warm-ups and had to default her singles and doubles matches.
Waicol’s Ella McWilliam defeated Martha Wojcikowski in a super tiebreaker 6-2 1-6 10-5 in the only match played.
