The New Zealand Transport Agency is inviting people to voice their thoughts on speed limit changes in Wairarapa, with a focus on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Featherston.
Public engagement on speed limits and infrastructure improvements for SH2 gets under way on Thursday, November 5, at the Featherston RSA, where it will come to Greytown, Carterton, and Masterton in the following days.
No doubt in Featherston there will be talk of the 70kmh zone at either approach to the town, which some residents have said encroach too far into the town.
There have been two deaths since 2003 at the northern Tauherenikau end, with the last in 2019 after an overtired truck driver veered on to the wrong side of the road.
Several people had also lost pets to the stretch, which is now arguably more urbanised than when the 70kmh limits were installed.
NZTA director of regional relationships Emma Speight said these public meetings would aim to give the public a view of the plan to reduce deaths and serious injuries on this section of SH2.
“Speed limits and infrastructure improvements work in tandem to create a safe and efficient network for the many people who use SH2.
“The sessions in Featherston, Greytown, Carterton, and Masterton are an opportunity for the community to discuss their experiences on the highway with our project team and to give us their feedback and concerns.
“No matter what causes a crash, speed is always a factor in the severity.
“Ensuring speed limits are safe and appropriate is one of the most effective things we can do to help prevent deaths and serious injuries.”
Infrastructure projects, such as the Norfolk Rd roundabout would also be discussed.
