Masterton’s Deputy Mayor Graham McClymont enjoyed flushing the refurbished Henley Lake toilets on Thursday while making a quip about pulling mayoral chains.

But Mayor Lyn Patterson was close by with a large pair of ceremonial scissors so he was quickly silenced and held up the toilet paper ribbon for her worship to snip in half – then she officially declared the toilet block open for business.

The male and female toilets have new benchtops and a new concrete painted surface and basins.

There are also new showers in each.

The larger accessible toilet is open 24-hours and has a baby changing table.

The baby change table, cleaner’s sink, shelving, and hardware was repurposed from the town hall.

There are also new security lights installed at this toilet block.

“The open-all-hours toilet is great for early morning and evening walkers – the lake is increasingly popular, and I am pleased the toilets are refurbished to a good standard,” Patterson said.

It was good for visitors in motorhomes to have a toilet available all the time and this would encourage more holidaymakers to stop off in Masterton, she said.

The upgrade of toilets at the Kid’s Own Playground in Queen Elizabeth Park was near completion after a covid-19 lockdown delay.

New toilets at Castlepoint lagoon were also under construction, with work expected to be completed before the busy summer season.

The Jetty Rd toilets were also getting a revamp.

Council properties and facilities manager Audrey Dench said the council was flushed with the success of work on the toilets.

“I think we’ve been on a bit of a roll and got our business done,” she said.
