As part of the Wairarapa Cancer Society’s card competition, Wairarapa students were able to talk about family members who had suffered from cancer with the support of their school art classes.
The cards, which students created, would be printed by the Wairarapa Cancer Society to be given to patients and their families.
One of the competition judges Bob Francis said this element of giving back was “very exciting”
Chanel College Principal Debi Marshall-Lobb said the integrated learning experience was very special.
“Students were able to honour the memory of people they knew who had suffered from cancer,” Marshall-Lob said.
“They realised how significant the daffodil is and what they were doing for this because, so it was a wonderful initiative.”
A prizegiving was held at Aratoi on Tuesday for the competition.
Andrew Laidlaw, Year 8, was one of the judged finalists from Chanel College.
He said he did not expect to win and did his entry on the computer.
“I have a learning disability and it was very hard for me to do this – I was shocked when my name was called out.”
