A 42-year-old man was in critical condition in Wellington Hospital on Friday night having earlier been found lying on State Highway 2 in Carterton.

Police believe the man was hit by a car from 1am to 2am near the intersection of Plimsoll St.

A car with two occupants stopped when they saw the man on the median line on State Highway 2 around 2am, and rang police.

It’s not certain how long the man had been there.

The man, who police believe lives in Carterton, was unconscious when found.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth who is leading the investigation said the man was flown to Wellington by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and immediately went into surgery.

“We are crossing our fingers that he comes through the surgery,” Bysouth said.

“If you were the person that’s hit him, tell us – come and see us and give us your explanation as to what happened.”

Bysouth said they were keeping an open mind on what caused the accident, and it was even possible the man was unconscious before being hit.

“We would also like to hear from any witnesses travelling on this stretch of road earlier [Friday] or anyone who might have information to help us identify what has happened.”

Police closed SH2 from 12.30pm on Friday for about 45 minutes to conduct a scene examination. Diversions were put in place between Park Rd and Somerset Rd.

Anyone with information can contact police phoning 105 or anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
