For Alan Gray, the Eketahuna Lawn Mower Racing Annual Fundraiser is much more than a competition.

The event started as a bit of fun to raise the spirits of his wife Megan who was battling stomach cancer and raise funds to support Arohanui Hospice.

It had just six mowers.

This Saturday, about 30 people are expected to participate in the event, with some travelling from Taranaki and Bay of Plenty to compete.

“It’s definitely come a long way,” he said.

“It’s put Eketahuna on the map.”

It’s not just the competition which has grown though.

Last year, the event raised $2500 for the hospice which provided palliative care for Megan, and the group has already raised more than $1300 ahead of this weekend.

“I think people are attracted to it because of the cause we raise money for. There’s a feel-good factor.”

Gray said many of the competitors enjoyed the sport but got their kicks from raising money for a “great cause”.

The competition also made for a great family-focused activity.

There are multiple racing classes, including a golden oldies, women’s, and an endurance category – in which all 30 mowers will aim to complete 25 laps.

Entertainment will include a barrel train and appearance from the Lightning McQueen imitation race car.

“It’s a huge day of family fun,” Gray said.

The race will be held from 10.30am at the corner of Cliff Rd and State Highway 2.
