Say the magic words, Aunty Alice Bought Us This, and people of a certain vintage are likely to break into song.

The band behind the hit were Hogsnort Rupert formed in 1968 and a regular fixture on the New Zealand entertainment scene, including on television, well into the 1970s.

Lead singer Alec Wishart went off to the original flagon band in the sky in 2016, but founding members Dave Luther, Kevin Findlater and Neil Worboys, have collaborated with other great Wellington musicians from Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band and Dave and the Dynamos to develop a new band called the Hogsnort Bulldogs Goodtime Show.

The band will perform at the Carterton Events Centre on Saturday, March 21.

The show’s song list features all the bands’ chart-topping hits from the era including Pretty Girl, Miss September, Aunty Alice Bought Us This, Everyone Knows and Life Begins at Forty.

Other well-known skiffle songs, blues, and popular standards are also featured in the two-hour show.

“We’re delighted to be bringing all our popular original songs and toe-tapping approach back to Wairarapa after a few decades absence, Luther said.

“We love the idea of showcasing our ‘good-time’ music in a positively-focused heartland area like Wairarapa.

“This region’s always been a hot spot for arts and craft lovers and knows how to make the most of its entertainment capability, organising and hosting great annual events like Toast Martinborough, the Hot Air Balloon Festival and the Wairarapa Country Music Festival.

“We’re sure there’s bound to be a fair number of Wairarapa folk who’d love to experience some happy nostalgia from the seventies … who want to spend a few hours smiling, laughing and tapping their shoes to tunes that evoke pleasant memories of what they were up to ‘back in the day’.

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised by people who’ve wanted to tell us after the show how much they enjoyed that experience.”

Tickets for the show which starts at 7.30pm on March 21 are $35 and can be purchased from eventfinda.co.nz, or by calling into the Carterton Events Centre.
