A 74-year-old man died after his vehicle crashed into a concrete bridge barrier along Te Whiti Rd on Thursday afternoon.
Just after 1.30pm, emergency services were called to the scene of a single vehicle crash.
The driver was the sole occupant of the car.
The man was driving east and collided with the bridge barrier at the beginning of Carterton district, just before the intersection with Te Kopi Rd.
Diversions were put in place along Te Whiti Rd, from Lees Pakaraka Rd intersection to Tupurupuru Te Wharau Rd, until 5pm.
Police said the cause of the crash was unknown and the Serious Crash Unit were investigating.
It was the second road death in the region in the first month of the year, the other crash also occurring in Carterton.
Glenys Mary Rowe, 73, died when the car she was driving collided with a truck at the intersection of Thomas and Dalefield roads on January 13.
A 42-year-old man remains in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital as a result of that crash.
Four people died on Wairarapa roads last year.
