Car chase ends in arrests

Four people have been taken into custody after crashing a stolen car into a roadside hedge on State Highway 2 north of Opaki on Sunday evening.

Police identified the vehicle as being stolen in Pahiatua at about 6.25pm and attempted to stop the driver.

When the driver didn’t, police pursued.

Road spikes were placed across the road north of Opaki and the car crashed into a hedge shortly before 7pm.

Three men and one woman exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but were later apprehended.

Police also responded to five separate crashes across the region on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to High St South, Carterton shortly after 2.30am on Saturday morning after a car hit a power pole, causing several homes to lose power. The driver was not injured.

Just before 6pm a car and motorcycle collided on Greytown’s Main St, at the intersection with Humphries St..

Then at 7.30pm there was a two-car noseto-tail crash on South Rd in Masterton.

Two cars also collided at the intersection of Kitchener St and Princess St in Martinborough shortly before 8pm.

Finally police were called to a two-car crash about 9.35pm on Masterton’s Dixon St.

There were no serious injuries reported.
