Injury plagued Wairarapa have finished seventh at the Central Districts Under-17 boys tournament.
Serious knee injuries to left arm pace bowler Joe Falloon and all-rounder Hunter Wyeth ruled them out for most of the tournament.
Wairarapa’s first match, against Wanganui, ended early because of rain with their opponents declared winners under the Duckworth Lewis Stern system.
Wairarapa senior rep batsman Jake Jonas followed up his century in last Saturday’s Umpires Cup final for Rathkeale, with a superb 88 as the team amassed 193-8 in their 50 overs.
Falloon was ruled out from bowling after a knee injury, leaving the team short of a frontline bowler.
Medium pacer Jesse McIntyre picked up a three-wicket bag as Wanganui were reduced to 132-5 when rain began fall.
In the second game against Manawatu, Wairarapa’s injury woes worsened when Wyeth injured a knee while batting.
Wairarapa scored a below par 184-9, with Gus Borren top scoring with 53.
Their prospects weren’t helped when they forced to field with 10 players after Manawatu refused to provide a substitute fielder.
Manawatu scored the winning runs for the loss of three wickets in the 42nd over.
Wednesday’s game with Nelson was washed out without a ball being bowled, leaving Wairarapa stranded at the bottom of the table.
In the seventh-eighth playoff with Marlborough, Borren scored his second half century [55], while Jesse McIntyre top scored with 58, in the total of 262-8.
Rogan Ross, on loan from Hawke’s Bay, hit a useful 34 not out coming in at number eight.
Borren then picked up 3-25 and Ross grabbed 3-9 as Marlborough crumbled to be all out for 104.
Borren’s all-round efforts could have him in line for selection in the Central Districts’ squad for the national Under-17 tournament.
Jonas could also come into selection consideration as a top order batsman.
