It was sheep on the lam in Pownall St, Masterton on Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 3pm Wairarapa College students, dressed in high viz, blocked off adjoining roads, stopped traffic and herded a mob of about 250 sheep down the road from school to a paddock near the Millennium Reserve.
Occasionally onlookers would see a student run off to the side to chase a runaway making a dash for a suburban garden.
Head of Agriculture Dan Grace said by moving the stock the students learn about their safety, the stocks’ safety, and vehicle management.
They move stock between the paddocks about a dozen times a year. This mob of sheep was to be weaned [separate the lambs from the ewes] for sale next week.
