Two strong men’s teams have been named for Wairarapa’s opening representative fixture against Kapiti at the Masterton Bowling Club on Sunday.

Selector Peter Davidson has plumped for the experienced Ian Monaghan for the singles spot in the A team.

The Featherston combination of Scott Mackenzie and Hayden Frew will play the pairs.

The four is also a talented combination with John Claydon, Gary Caffell, and Warren Fisher from the Masterton club joined by Featherston veteran Les O’Donovan.

Masterton’s Ronnie Saunders has secured the singles role in the B team.

Greytown clubmates Dean Hands and Darren Meyrick form a useful pairs combination, having performed well at last season’s national intercentre championships.

Steve Willis from Greytown will lead the four which includes Dave Richards from Carrington, Masterton’s Lester Dee, and Buster Hemi from Featherston.

The women’s teams have a somewhat experimental look to them.

In-form Masterton bowler Makaia Campbell has the coveted singles position in the A team.

Featherston clubmates Dale Rowe and Janelle Frew will play the pairs, while the four of Tanya Wheeler and Maryanne Ashworth from Featherston, Masterton’s Leah Mackenzie, and Carrington’s Stacey Smyth is an untried combination.

Fifteen-year old Solway College student Olivia Mancer will get her chance to shine at senior representative level, being named to play the singles for the B team.

Masterton’s Fiona Mancer and Shirley Poutu from Featherston form an experienced pair.

Brenda Whitehead and Dianne Haswell from Park, Lansdowne’s Elaine Hemi and Jenna Tewhare from Greytown make up the four.

The teams will be combined to play a round of 2-4-2 bowls in the morning, with two points awarded for a win. Traditional singles, pairs and fours, with three points for a win, will be played in the afternoon.
