Carterton worked hard to beat Martinborough Two and retain a share of the lead in the Shirley Corlett Trophy regional one tournament at Gladstone on Saturday.
Carterton won 3-0 after Matt Spooner and Andi Steinemann were each taken to three sets in their singles matches.
Number one Spooner dropped the first set to Ed Wilkie 4-6, before winning the remaining two sets 6-0 6-1.
Steinemann beat Jaime McMaster 6-4 6-7 6-3.
Spooner and Steinemann easily won the doubles 6-2 6-0.
Martinborough One joined Carterton at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Opaki.
Their number one, Chris Wilkie, beat Brett Dymond 6-1 6-3. Marco de Groot was taken to a tiebreak in the first set by Chris Davidson but dominated the second set to win 6-0.
Wilkie and de Groot had a comfortable 6-0 6-4 win in the doubles.
Gladstone beat Masterton 2-1, the match decided in a tight third set in the doubles.
Boon Huxtable got Masterton off to the perfect start with a 6-2 6-3 win over Scott Day.
William Day beat Rhys Hooper 6-2 6-4 to level the score for Gladstone.
Huxtable and Hooper won the first set of the doubles 6-1 but the Day claimed the second and third sets in tiebreakers for a 1-6 7-6 7-6 victory.
