Demolition starts at Masterton Moore Wilson’s this week to make way for a new, modern building designed with solar panels to capture the sun.
It will complement an existing building which will stay open.
Company directors Graeme and Julie Moore said they had the building designed to reduce energy consumption.
“I feel quite strongly, that this is the future,” Julie Moore said. “It was an environmental decision to reduce our energy consumption.
“We believe it is our responsibility as business owners to, where possible, invest in renewable energy sources like solar power.
“We’ve had solar power at our Wellington central store for a considerable length of time and are rolling this out to Masterton. The building will make the most of the Wairarapa sun.
“It’s a big development with a considerable refit. It’s exciting as there is a whole new liquor store and barista space.”
The development includes an electric vehicle charging station.
Moore Wilson is having these installed in Wellington and Porirua too.
The kitchen, homewares and toy department at the Dixon St site are now closed.
But some stock is still available.
“We have a selection of kitchenware, crockery and glassware available in the grocery area.
“We’re not keeping the toy department but many of these items can be bought online along with a bigger range of kitchen and homewares.
“Obviously when operating we need to work around the refit and build but the store is very much open, nothing changes in that regard.”
The new store will have a larger liquor department, a specialty food and kitchenware market with barista-made coffee and fresh and artisan products retailed alongside kitchenware essentials.
“We are very much committed to Wairarapa and we have been for a long time,” Moore said.
The new store was designed by Athfield Architects, who Moore Wilson’s have worked with on numerous projects since the 1970s. Building works will be carried out by Masterton builders, MB Brown Ltd.
The redevelopment is in three stages and expected to take a year to 18 months.
Graeme and Julie Moore are third and fourth generation directors of the company that has operated in Masterton for 75 years.
