Patients chase donation box thieves down street
Theft leaves bad taste

Patients and staff at Featherston Medical Centre were left “disgusted” after two men stole a Daffodil Day donation box full of cash from its reception area on Friday afternoon.

Two men had come into the medical centre at about 3pm and took the donation box as the receptionist was dealing with a patient, said Aruni Dias, the medical centre’s practice manager.

The men, one of whom had a “distinctive eye tattoo”, took off towards Fitzherbert St chased by staff and patients before escaping.

Dias asked for people to keep an eye out for them – particularly the man with the tattoo around his eye.

Police were alerted quickly as well as other organisations who had collection boxes in the area.

“Police are involved, but we just thought we’d put it out there because we’re really disgusted.

“Our patients are really upset, people who are quite unwell chased after them which was really sweet. It’s disgusting really – the box was quite full.”

Dias said the response and support from the community had been great.

“It’s a small town so you put it out there and people just want to help.

“It was a beautiful day to remember people who have passed away from cancer, and why we’re raising money for this amazing cause.

“It’s gross. It’s gross when you’re thinking about it.”

The theft came on the same day the centre won first place for the ‘best dressed’ Daffodil Day retailer in South Wairarapa for its window display.

  1. Karma will sort the scooter out.

I imagine with that tattoo he will be well known to the police and they will be turning up with a pair of cuffs in due course.

  2. Shame on you! You really are the lowest of the low! I am absolutely appalled. It’s to be hoped that the thieves and/or their families never have need of the wonderful care offered by the wonderful peoples in NZ dedicated to helping those who suffer from Cancer.
