From fencepost to work of art

A feature of the RC Trucks Extravaganza in Pahiatua was a carving of DB Clydesdales and a wagon carved from a macrocarpa fencepost from Solway Showgrounds.

The carving was created by the late Ross Matson of Pahiatua, who was a very keen horse and dog man, managing sheep stations in Hunterville and Wairarapa.

Ross, in his 60s, managed Solway Showgrounds, where he found the macrocarpa post to carve the horses and wagon.

David Evans was a maintenance carpenter at DB Tui Brewery at Mangatainoka and when he needed a display – he knew Matson molded horses out of Dap.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I went down to Masterton about two months later to see Ross had started to carve the horses and wagon out of the post,” he said.

“Ross had not seen the horses and wagon in real life, as he died the very same day that the horses were in Masterton, when they went out to Castlepoint 26 years ago.”

It took a lot of patience over three years at least to carve it. The horses and wagon were gifted to his daughter [the late Lois] and Evans.
