The host of Wairarapa’s More FM breakfast show, Brent Gare, will attempt to become a Masterton district councillor in the upcoming local body elections.

Gare said it’s time the council had new blood and new ideas.

“It’s about looking at what we are doing not just now but what Masterton might look like in 20 years,” he said.

“I thought hey, there’s a lot of knockers of the council but sometimes you’ve got to do the work from within to understand everything that goes on.”

Gare would like to see a sustainable future built around water, with more encouragement for business and job opportunities for youth.

“I’ve chosen to stand up, as I’m proud to call Masterton home, and I’d love for all residents to say the same,” he said.

“Masterton is an amazing place to raise a family, with plenty of opportunity. It’s time we recognised that and got some more positivity on council.”

Gare who has been in Wairarapa for 15 years said issues that are important to him include rate control, a sustainable future, a functional town centre and library, enhancement of parks and sporting facilities, encouraging business growth and employment opportunities, and action on the civic centre.
