Douglas Villa Magpies made no race of their top of Division One clash with Masterton TJ Plastering Athletic, running away with a 6-2 victory on the weekend.

The win was the Magpies’ second of the season over their fierce rivals and opened up a three-point lead in the championship race.

It also stretched the Magpies’ winning run in this year’s local league to nine games.

Carterton moved into a share of third with Douglas Villa Pak’nSave, who they beat 3-1, and Wairarapa United Social had their first win of the second round, beating Greytown Fresh Choice 3-1.

The two Douglas Villa sides, Magpies and Pak ‘n Save, clash in the final games in the second round this weekend. Athletic play United and Greytown take on Carterton.

Featherston jumped to the lead in Division Two after a 3-0 win over Greytown ITM. Masterton Royals are two points behind after being held to a 2-2 draw by Douglas Villa Skulls, and Masterton McAuley’s got their first points of the second round with a 4-0 drubbing of Douglas Villa Mitre 10 Megabeens.

Martinborough lead the way in Division Three after a 2-0 win over the winless Carterton Reapers. Masterton Lions were too good for Evergreens, winning their encounter 4-1, while Greytown Spartans won a 13-goal thriller with Featherston United 7-6.

The second round wraps up on Saturday with two of the leading teams, Martinborough and Lions, to meet in a potential competition decider.

Red Star romp

HOCKEY

Red Star opened a seven-point lead at the top of the men’s Division One after a 3-1 win over defending champions Kia Kaha.

In other fixtures, Dalefield Dodgers upset Red Star Old Boys 3-2, and JNL beat Featherston 3-1.

In this weekend’s games, Carterton Vets face a double-header, against JNL on Saturday, followed by a vital match with Kia Kaha on Sunday. Red Star will be looking to avenge a first-round draw with Red Star Old Boys, and Featherston will be looking to end their winless streak, when they take on Dalefield Dodgers.

Dalefield NZ Racing extended their lead in women’s Division One to four points with a thrilling 3-2 win over Red Star to avenge their first-round loss. Kia Kaha moved to third place after beating Gladstone Gold 3-0, and East Coast got the better of Featherston 5-1.

In Division Two, Coasties had another big win, 7-0 over Martinborough, GAS Eketahuna thrashed Wairarapa Mitsubishi 7-0, Eketahuna Tuis defeated Featherston Foxies 3-1, and Gladstone Black edged Tumu ITM 1-0.
