Rural careers top lists in Masterton online searches

Masterton may no longer have a rural training centre at Taratahi but there is plenty of interest in careers in the countryside if the “most searched for jobs” on careers.govt.nz are anything to go by.

Nationwide, the top search is for police officer but in Masterton police officer is second to dairy farmer.

The lists have been compiled by the Tertiary Education Commission, which couldn’t provide a Wairarapa-wide list but had one for Masterton.

Nationwide, after police officer, the most searched for job was registered nurse followed by psychologist, secondary-school teacher, accountant, flight attendant, pilot, paramedic, electrician and air traffic controller.

As the graphic shows, we’re more down to earth in Masterton.

“We know that these searches will show up different results at any given time, but it’s interesting to see the movement in what career choices are on the rise,” says Tim Fowler, Chief Executive of the Tertiary Education Commission.

Surgeon made it into the top-10 list for Auckland at 10. The Auckland list went police officer, registered nurse, psychologist, secondary-school teacher, flight attendant, pilot, air traffic controller, electrician, civil engineer then surgeon.

In Wellington, police officer was the top search but policy analyst made it into ninth position and primary school teacher to 10th. Train driver turned up at No 5 on the Wellington list.

In Christchurch police officer was again the top search and early childhood teacher, quarantine officer and chef made it into the top 10.

The top 10 jobs searched in Masterton from January 1 to April 23, 2019, were:
