The latest property figures are in, and they confirm Carterton is in fact the next big thing.

The average asking price in Carterton is $409,750 for October, up 25.8 per cent on the same period last year, according to the latest TradeMe figures.

The numbers back up what Wairarapa real estate agents are saying about the current property boom.

Various agents say that while the entire region is humming, Carterton seems to be the current pick of the bunch.

For Wairarapa as a whole, the average asking price is $333,250 for October, compared to $322,300 on the same period last year.

For Masterton it is $286,200, and for South Wairarapa $381,050, which is down 2.8 per cent on the same period last year.

New records have been set for the country’s property market with the average asking price for a residential property increasing 2.9 per cent to a record high $618,000 last month, according to TradeMe.

Nigel Jefferies, head of TradeMe Property, said spring had bought new life to the property market.

“The last 30 days has seen over $17,000 added to the average asking price of property for sale in New Zealand,” he said.

“It’s been a familiar story recently, with new price records being broken almost every month and over $46,000 added to sellers’ expectations over the last year.”
