A strong all-round performance from Waicol captain Oliver Bunny saw the side gain their second win of the College Sport Wellington Premier Grade competition on Saturday.

Wairarapa College First XI beat St Patrick’s College 2nd XI by 20 runs in their 50-over match played at Kilbirnie Park in Wellington.

Wairarapa College won the toss and decided to bat first, a decision which paid dividends.

An opening stand of 40 runs, was followed by Perry Lewis and captain Oliver Bunny combining to extend the score to the 100 mark before Lewis was dismissed for a well-made 47 from 76 balls including eight fours.

Bunny went on to complete a half-century but the all-rounder’s innings ended shortly afterwards, bowled for 53 runs from 81 balls.

St Pat’s fought back after his dismissal, although further contributions were made by Jake Young [21], Mark Steventon [10], Zac Te Maro [10] and Hadley Wiramanaden [13 not out], which ensured Wairarapa College used their 50 overs in compiling a score of 215-8.

In reply St Pat’s made a good start reaching 51 before Bunny stepped in, taking a wicket with his first ball and a second not long after.

Steventon then chimed in with two scalps to leave St Pat’s at 101-4 after 27 overs.

The home team fought back over the next 12 overs and the match hung in the balance until Bunny reintroduced himself and halted the Wellington side’s progress, breaking the fifth wicket partnership at 164.

Ultimately St Pat’s were dismissed 20 runs short of their target, in the 48th over.

Wairarapa College 215-8, 50 overs [O Bunny 53, P Lewis 47, J Young 21; Y Sing-Kalsi 2-22, Y Thuiyadura 1-16] beat St Patrick’s 195, 47.2 overs [B Christie 43, Z Cattermole 47, H Kidd 36; M Steventon 4-21, O Bunny 4-32] by 20 runs.
