The journey to find South Wairarapa District Council a fresh logo that reflects the new millennium is drawing to a close with two options competing to be the final design.

About 400 residents have been selected to have their say on which design they prefer, and the final decision will be made at the council’s next full council meeting on February 20.

Tauherenikau-based agency Satellite Design are behind the new look.

The two options share the same colour palette.

One appears to feature the ranges that surround the district and a shoreline that could belong to Lake Wairarapa or the coast.

The other is more abstract with a single white koru on a triangular pattern.

The council opted to update its logo last year, after market research revealed “overwhelmingly negative” feedback to the current design, which was designed in 1989 when the Featherston, Martinborough, and representing each of the four former councils with four pakeha men shaking hands.

It also has a sheep, a building, some mountains and trees.

The council Logo Working Party chairwoman Leigh Hay said Satellite Design presented a range of logo concepts that were whittled down to the two preferred options.

“These final two are currently being tested in a market research process.

“Approximately 400 residents, representative of our population, have been invited to take part in an online survey to provide feedback that will help the council choose the final logo.

“We look forward to the decision being made at the council meeting on 20 February.”

The new logo was expected to cost between $10,000 and $25,000 to produce and will be rolled out over two financial years.
