WaiCol demolish Kapiti rivals

Wairarapa College First XI beat Kapiti College by 189 runs in their annual two-day match played at Paraparaumu Domain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wairarapa, put in to bat, got off to a solid start through openers Josh Nelson [35] and William Sargent [28].

Captain Oliver Bunny combined defence and attack to amass 79 runs from 84 balls in an innings that included six fours and two sixes, before being dismissed.

Mark Steventon also made a patient and valuable contribution of 47 from 82 balls, including five fours until a sharp catch at short cover ended his innings.

Perry Lewis chipped in with 12, before the tail was wrapped up in the 62nd leaving Wairarapa College at 236.

Opening bowlers Josh Nelson and Eric Bargh kept the pressure on and Kapiti found it difficult to score.

Things were made even more difficult for the hosts when spinners Jake Young and Bunny came into the attack. They picked up seven wickets between them to have Kapiti reeling at 73 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

Young bowled superbly, taking four wickets for 37 runs with Bunny picking up 3-34.

Kapiti were dismissed for 144 from 46 overs, leaving WaiCol a first innings lead of 92.

WaiCol declared their second innings at 214-4 on the second day and dismissed Kapiti for 117 to secure a handy victory.

Nelson and Bargh struck early with the ball leaving Kapiti trying to save the match.

Nelson bowled with pace and accuracy to take 5-28 and was well-supported by Bargh, 3-25.

Rathkeale second in quad tournament

Rathkeale College’s First XI finished second in a three-day quadrangular tournament the team hosted this week after a loss in their final match.

Rathkeale lost to Hutt Valley International Boys School on Thursday in the final match of the tournament.

Hutt Valley opened the batting and were dismissed for 137 in the 39th over of the 50-over match.

Rathkeale’s Jesse McIntyre shone with 3-21 with Ralph McLeod, 2-17, and George Tanner, 2-24, providing able support.

John McKenzie gave Rathkeale a bright start with 36 runs from 52 balls and Gus Borren who stepped in at first drop hitting 20 runs off 40 balls.

But a collapse had Rathkeale bowled out for 111.

In their first match of the tournament, Rathkeale beat Marlborough Boys College by four wickets, reaching 178-6 after Marlborough had scored 177.

Rathkeale lost their second match by two runs. Nelson College scored 180 all out batting first but Rathkeale were dismissed for 178.
