Lakeview School have won the Super 10 Intermediate Sports Competition for the very first time.

The Super 10 competition runs throughout the year and features a range of different sports, while schools take turns to host different sports.

The final competition [athletics] was scheduled to be held on Tuesday, but the inclement weather meant it could not go ahead.

Lakeview were leading the competition by just two points after winning the football event in August, and the abandonment of the athletics meant they could not be overtaken.

It was only two years ago that Lakeview won their first ever tournament, and last year they won two but only finished mid-table.

The football win was a highlight of the sporting year for the school, as they swept aside all their opponents to go on a six-match winning streak against other teams from Manawatu and Tararua.

It was only a dramatic comeback in the final against Roslyn School that secured a 2-1 win, after they had trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Lakeview School sports co-ordinator Maree Eastwood said at the time that it was a great achievement for the school.

“We are traditionally not as strong in football as we are in rugby and we won the rugby one earlier this year.

“You put your best foot forward and you have to bring it on the day.”

School principal Tim Nelson said in a Facebook post that it was a fantastic effort for the school to win the event for the first time, and praised Eastwood for her commitment to the cause.

“This competition has seen Lakeview Year 7 and 8 sports teams up against the large full primary schools from the Tararua and Manawatu districts in a wide range of sports from the beginning of the year up until [Tuesday], which was to have been the athletics event.

“This success doesn’t happen by accident, it’s the result of having a board of trustees who is prepared to invest in a sports co-ordinator, finding the right person for this role, having staff members stepping up to coach and prepare teams for events, whanau ensuring that their children are organised for events, and the students who give it their all in every competition.”

He said it gave him so much pride to see the school’s students making the most of their opportunities to be successful.
